How to Share a Grocery List via QR Code or WhatsApp
Texting Items Back and Forth Gets Messy
You’re heading to the store and message your partner: “Anything we need?” They send three items. Halfway down the aisles, two more arrive. By checkout you’ve got a thread to piece together, duplicates to sort out, and the feeling you still forgot something.

Two Ways to Share — and They’re Different
- QR code or invite code → shop together. This turns your list into a live shared list. Everyone who joins can add and check off items, and every change shows up on all phones in real time.
- WhatsApp → send a copy. This sends a neat, formatted snapshot of your list as a message. The other person can read it, but they can’t edit it and it won’t update.
Rule of thumb: if you’re both going to keep changing the list, share the live one. If someone just needs to see it, send a copy.
Share a Live List (QR Code or Invite Code)
Best when you’re shopping together or keeping a household list everyone adds to.
The owner starts it. Open the list and tap Share (only the list’s owner can start a shared list). CartWise shows two things:
- a QR code to scan, and
- a 6-character invite code for reading aloud — it leaves out look-alike characters like O/0 and I/1, so it’s easy to say over the phone without confusion.
The other person can join in three ways:
- Scan inside CartWise — they open the app, tap Join, and scan the code.
- Scan with any phone camera — point the regular camera app at the QR and CartWise opens straight to the join screen.
- Type the code — enter the 6 characters by hand.
Once they’re in, the list is live for everyone: add an item, check one off, or remove one, and it appears on every phone within seconds. It works offline too — changes you make with no signal catch up automatically when you’re back online — and members get a notification when someone adds something.
The invite code lasts 7 days. If you ever want to cut off access or hand out a fresh one, the owner can regenerate it from the share screen.
Send a Copy via WhatsApp (or Anywhere)
Best when someone just needs to see the list and won’t be editing it.
- Open the list and tap the ⋮ menu.

Shared via CartWise- Pick WhatsApp from the share sheet (Messages, Telegram, and email work too), choose a chat, and the list is already filled in — just send.

Just remember: this is a snapshot. It won’t update, and the other person can’t edit it. For a list you both keep changing, use the QR or invite code above.
